Pantone's Radiant Orchid Inspired Interiors

Thursday, January 09, 2014

Pantone describe Radiant Orchid as; “An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.”

I have to admit, that personally, I preferred 2013's colour of the year. The deep and gorgeous Emerald Green was such a vibrant change from the muted tones of everyday life; it translated into fashion, beauty and interiors effortlessly while managing to look luxurious and glamorous.  As someone who had an all purple room (walls, bedding, curtains, cushions.. you name it, it was purple) as a child this colour is taking some getting used to again... Especially as it seems to have quite an almost sickly warm undertone.
I thought I'd look into some Radiant Orchid inspired interiors to see how it fairs in a real world setting...
These first two interiors show just how bright an impact you can create from using a solid colour against white. I have to admit the almost electric shade of the paint in the first image is swaying me slightly! I'm a bit of a coward when it comes to bright colours, I tend to stick to dark or muted clothes and neutral bases in rooms, so going full-on purple is a bit of a shock to me.
I do however, love the idea of using purple in small unexpected ways to inject a burst of personality and colour into a blank canvas. Especially as when the trends change your room won't feel unbearably outdated ("feature" walls anyone? Paper any one random wall in your all cream living room in a bright boudoir pattern...These just remind me of early 2004's 60-minute makeover, in the worst way possible).

I adore this purple bathroom! Who would have thought that purple tiles could look so modern and cool? I think this does require the minimalist sink and mirror though, as a classical basin could make it look old and questionably "retro" very easily.
As someone with a light wood Ikea ODDA wardrobe (neither functional nor attractive!) this gorgeous plum toned armoire is calling to me. The simple shape and subtle gold handles make this such a classic piece you know would look incredible in any house of room whether it be bright, white and modern or dark and grey with ornate coving and cornicing. It would also be a fantastic DIY project; the hardest part would be deciding what shade of purple to paint it!
This colour is definitely growing on me.... at least I'll have the whole of 2014 to get used to it!

  1. I actually like the color! Although, I didn't have an all-purple room as a kid :) I think the purple is good in random pops of color, like the photo you have of the purple cabinet. I agree with you that the purple walls are a little overboard though :-P
